While riding, I routinely coast down to the lake with my motorcycles engine off. It's a winding path down to the lake, about a mile long, and I turn my engine off so as to increase my chances of seeing wildlife. I see Deer all the time, but this time was different.
I road right upon a Doe. I became more and more curious as to why she let me get closer and closer to her - I came within ~15 yards of her & she continued to just stand there and look at me.
The reason became immediately apparent. Just to my left, her Fawn jolted out of the bushes, ran across the road & down the mountain side & she followed. She was not going to easily leave without the Fawn. It reminded me of how other mammals, like Black Bears, will protect their newborns. Many Reptiles & Amphibians won't do this. Instead of having a few offspring, Reptiles and Amphibians will lay many many eggs - their way of securing the survival of their species is to do so, so that even if most don't survive, some will.
